Which AC is better for normal home use: inverter AC or 5-star-rated AC?

However, every machine requires maintenance to enhance its lifespan. Whether you buy an inverter AC or 5-star-rated AC, it is recommended to clean its ducts and filters regularly. Not only it will help you to increase the life of your AC, but also saves considerable power and reduces your electricity bill.

What is the difference between an inverter AC and a 5-star rating non-inverter AC?

1. Compressor Speed: The primary difference that makes the inverter AC different from a non-inverter AC is the functioning of the compressor. An inverter AC works on a variable speed compressor whereas a 5-star rated non-inverter AC has a single-speed compressor. It changes its speed as per the heat load and number of people.

2. The need of Stabilizer: A stabilizer is installed with the AC to maintain an optimum voltage range during the power fluctuations. Usually, it ranges from 160 to 245V. The components of the inverter AC are designed to work during this fluctuation range. Hence, an inverter AC doesn’t require a stabilizer. However, we can’t predict the actual voltage fluctuation range. So, it is better to have a stabilizer installed along with your AC.

3. Current Required: In the non-inverter AC, the motor requires 3-4 times more current for its operation, but an inverter AC motor has variable speed. Due to which, it needs much lesser current at startup; this factor also decides the size of the inverter/generator for an AC. For instance, if you want to run a non-inverter AC of 1.5 ton on an inverter/generator and it requires current from 10Amp to 30Amp for its operation, then it will require a 5kVA inverter/generator. On the other hand, an inverter/generator of 2kVA can support an inverter AC, as it needs only 6-7Amp current for its operation.

4. Power Factor: The power factor is the ratio of the real power absorbed by the load to the apparent power flowing in the current. The higher the power factor is, the lesser it will consume electricity. The power factor for an inverter AC is close to unity whereas a non-inverter AC has less power factor. For commercial appliances, there is a penalty for low power factor devices. Hence, an inverter AC not only reduces the power consumption but also help the industries to get rebates.

5. Automatic Adjustment: As inverter AC has variable compressor speed, it automatically adjusts its speed as per the room temperature. But, the non-inverter AC doesn’t have the ability to do so. Hence, an inverter AC keeps the room cool throughout its operation.

Does turning the AC on and off cost more?

During the summer, a lot of homeowners want to know how to shave money off of their electric bills. This is a common but important question we get all the time:

What seems like a simple question, is a little more complicated though. This question is actually two questions. When trying to optimize your AC’s energy usage, you need to look at the difference between on and off, or auto and off.

It may seem like “AUTO” is the more expensive option. After all, modern air conditioners are meant to cycle for shorter cycles, but in more frequent durations right? But actually, the “ON” setting costs more.

ON” Setting: Your AC fan stays on 24 hours a day and circulates the air throughout your home continuously.

AUTO” Setting: Your AC fan shuts off with the rest of the cooling system as soon as it reaches the temperature on your thermostat.

According to India Power & Light, a fan switched to “ON” will cycle 200 hours more per month than a fan switched to “AUTO.” Another benefit of keeping your fan on “AUTO” is that your AC is less likely to freeze up.

Air conditioners suck water out of the air like a straw. That moisture collects on the system’s coils. When the fan is on “AUTO,” the break in the air stream allows the coils inside of your air conditioner time for the condensation to drip off into the drain pan. However, when the fan is switched to “ON” less of the condensation can drop off – because more moisture is being added all the time. Some moisture may be blown back into the air, or freeze over the coils in your air conditioner causing an obstruction.
